Andrei Roiter en Galería Fúcares

La Galería Fúcares presenta en su espacio madrileño la primera exposición individual de Andrei Roiter, artista cuya visión del arte se nutre tanto del círculo conceptual ruso donde se formó como del espíritu del arte povera. Roiter abandona Rusia en 1990 y aunque se establece en Ámsterdam no rompe del todo los lazos con su país natal.  Actualmente divide su tiempo entre la capital holandesa y Nueva York. Aún así, Roiter no se considera un emigrante, sino un visitante permanente para el que su relación con el mundo exterior consiste en ser un extraño a la vez que un observador.

Andrei Roiter ha titulado su exposición Mi profesión es ser Andrei Roiter y en ella ofrece su visión del papel del artista, mitad comediante y mitad explorador. Para ello Roiter ha generado un vocabulario a partir de símbolos e imágenes relacionados con el viaje y la idea de “explorar”. El artista realiza objetos tridimensionales que pinta/retrata en el lienzo o exhibe como esculturas independientes. Cuando efectúa estos trabajos adquiere un papel de cómico ambulante que ejecuta sus propias maquetas y accesorios destinados a integrar una colección inacabable. Todo ello con una carga crítica e irónica que se vierte sobre estos torpes artefactos que son todo menos funcionales y parecen más un atrezzo teatral que una obra en sí mismos.

Para la exposición en la Galería Fúcares, Roiter ha seleccionado una serie de pinturas recientes que retratan varios de estos objetos, incluyendo estructuras esféricas de madera -que actúan como recordatorios visuales de los constructivistas rusos como Rodchenko, Tatlin y Liszitsky-, y dispositivos ópticos como cámaras y proyectores hechos a mano. Las categorías de ojo/proyector y cabeza/mundo representan para Roiter el acto de mirar, de ver, de documentar y de proyectar que son, precisamente, las actividades protagonistas de la profesión del artista.

Andrei Roiter estudió en el Institute of Architecture de Moscú entre 1978 y 1980; en esos años comienza a exponer sus trabajos en espacios alternativos de Moscú. A principios de los años 90 abandona Moscú como residencia y comienza a exponer regularmente en Europa y Estados Unidos.

Entre sus principales exposiciones destacaríamos las realizadas en la Regina Gallery de Moscow (2011), el Stedelijk Museum de Schiedam (2010), el Stedelijk Museum Den Bosch (2010), Impronte Contemporary Art, Milan (2010), Laura Bartlett Gallery, London (2008), Silverstein Gallery, New York (2001) y las realizadas con la Galería Akinci de Amsterdam. También ha participado en colectivas en el Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2009), la Galería Fúcares de Madrid (2008), el Stedelijk Museum de Schiedam (2008), la Bienal de Moscú (2007) y el Centraal Museum de Utrecht (2006).

Roiter’s vision was born in Russia, the country of his origin, and nurtured by the local conceptual art circle as well as the spirit of Arte Povera, for its use of simple, earthy materials. Leaving Russia in 1990, without severing his ties completely, Roiter settled in Amsterdam and now splits his time between there and New York. Yet Roiter sees himself not as an immigrant but as a permanent visitor. His relationship to the outside world is as a stranger and observer.

Showing for the first time in Spain at the Galería Fúcares, Andrei’s Roiter’s exhibition entitled ” My profession is to be Andrei Roiter” offers a view of the Artist as a traveling comedian/explorer. Roiter’s vocabulary consists out of symbols and images related to travel and exploration. He creates three-dimensional objects, which he sometimes paints or exhibits as independent sculptures. By making these objects, he projects the role of the artist as a traveling comedian who makes his own clumsy models and props for his endless trove. There is self-irony in the texture and construction of these artifacts: they are awkward and non-functional, more like props for a theatre play.

For the Fúcares exhibition, Roiter will show a series of recent paintings portraying his various props and artifacts from his collection, including spherical, wooden structures –visual reminders of works of Russian Constructivists like Rodchenko, Tatlin and Liszitsky– and handmade optical devices such as cameras and projectors. The eye/projector, head/globe-for Roiter these represent the act of looking, seeing, documenting and projecting–the chief activities of the Artist’s profession.

Roiter studied at the Institute of Architecture in Moscow (1978-1980). During this time he began to show his works in unofficial exhibition spaces in Moscow.Since the mid-80’s Roiter took part in several international exhibitions of Russian art in Europe and the U.S.  Then in the early 1990’s, Roiter relocated to the West, exhibiting in Germany, Switzerland, the U.S., Sweden and Japan.

Currently, Roiter lives between New York and Amsterdam. He recently exhibited at Regina Gallery, Moscow (2011), the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam (2010), Stedelijk Museum Den Bosch (2010), Impronte Contemporary Art, Milan (2010), Laura Bartlett Gallery, London (2008), Silverstein Gallery, New York (2001) and AKINCI, Amsterdam. He participated in group exhibitions at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2009), Galería Fúcares, Madrid (2008), Stedelijk Museum Schiedam (2008), The Moscow Biennale (2007), Centraal Museum, Utrecht (2006), Pratt Institute, New York (2002).  Upcoming shows are: Kunstmuseum Solothurn, CH (2011).
